1 YEAR Older and Wiser Too

Updates of the week:
Transfers happened --> I will be staying here in Bacuri (woot) and Sister Finati was transferred for PiriPiri! Super crazy that she is entering into her last 12 weeks now. Time flies SO FAST.
Oh yes, and hitting my 1 year mark was so strange. Like how has 1 year already passed by? It's incredible to see the difference that a year can do, but especially see how I have changed.
We celebrated my 1 year mark with a lot of rain HAHAHA. I ended up catching a cold after, but hey, it happens.

It's been super rainy this past week (which is hilarious, because about 2 or 3 weeks ago it was so hot the road was melting) the good thing is that it means it's pretty cold at night, which means I can use sweats. FINALLY, feels like Christmas haha.
This week we ended up doing TONS of contacts in our area, and just trying to build our teaching group again.

But all is well here in Bacuri!
SO CRAZY THAT NEXT WEEK IS CHRISTMAS. LIKE WHAT. HOW.
Excited and nervous and ready for the week to come (:
Feliz Natal!

It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! - Just kidding. Everything here still looks the same. Hahaha. BUT if it means anything, there are about 3 houses here with some christmas lights! It's the effort that counts (:

This week was good, and luckily a lot more eventful than last week (haha. I am sick of staying at home..)

Sister Dias had to go to Teresina to see the doctors there about her knee, so sis Dias and Caetano left Tuesday morning. Hoping and praying that everything will work out, and that she can get the help she needs to be feeling better and walk normal again.

Hilarious experience of the week:

We were walking in the road, and saw a lady walking towards us. We greeted her with "boa tarde!" and she greeted us back and waved - to which Sister Finati thought was a high five. So of course, trying to return the gesture, Sister Finati almost hit a lady in the face trying to give a high five that wasn't intended. HAHAHA.

Tuesday we had district meeting, and then headed out to interview Francisca. We had to remark her baptism for the next week due to the fact that she is having a hard time with café/smoking but she received a blessing from Elder Davis, and said she was feeling so much strength spiritually. I am grateful for the priesthood, and the power that is so real and so strong. Pray for Francisca and that she can continue strong!

We were able to receive some great referrals this week, a great handful of families (YAY FAMILIES!) One of them we have already started to teach - Fran and Kennige, and they have two kids, Kenya and Daymon Bryant (sidenote: it is super funny to hear names like these here, because generally everybody has the name 'José', 'Lindilmara', 'Patricia', etc.) We taught them about prayer and invited them to start praying together as a family. I am super excited to see their progress, as well as contact these other families this week! We´ll have lots of other miracles to talk about this next week, for sure!

I hope everyone is getting excited for Christmas! Yesterday the stake had a christmas program - so good. I love the fact that no matter the language, or traditions, we all celebrate Christmas with the same Spirit. They showed this video before starating (which I LOVE so much). I always get chills watching this.

boa semana!

Hello Ankle!

news of the week! I tripped in the road and did something to a ligament in my foot/leg. WOOT WOOT. So I am now doing physical therapy, and life is grand. All is good. Atleast nobody died.

So yes, I stayed at home with Sister Dias, another Sister who has mais ou menos destroyed her knee.. she fell in São Luís and hit her knee really bad. We are praying for her that all will be well, because she will most likely need to go home to do surgery on her knee. The mission life is rough people.
But the good side of things is that this left lots, and lots, and LOTS of time to study. I read a lot from the President Hinckly manual, and loved the chapter on serving one another. Loved what he said about service, that "The best antidote I know for worry is work. The best medicine for despair is service. The best cure for weariness is the challenge of helping someone who is even more tired."

have a wonderful week all,
Sis Hill

Bacuri, mangoes and life

Life could not be better here in Bacuri! I love Imperatriz, and I LOVE my companion, Sister Finati. We atually lived together in Parnaíba, then I was her LTS in São Luís, and now we are LTS together here in Imperatriz. Heavenly Father is blessing me, for sure.

I have to admit, saying goodbye to São Luís was super hard, especially saying goodbye to our investigators. I was bummed out that they closed our area, due to the fact that the members aren't proactive, and the number of missionaries is falling like crazy.. PRAY FOR OUR INVESTIGATORS PLEASE! I hope and pray that they can continue to learn about the gospel and soon after be baptized.

So our situation here in Bacuri. The area divided, so there are 4 of us living/working here together - Sister Finati, Sister Dias, Sister Caetano, and I.
Not too much has happened in our area yet, due to the fact that we had the leadership counsel in Teresina this past week, as well as zone conference.
Crazy story of the week: yesterday, we had Stake Conference with the Seventy of the Area, Elder Guedes. Sister Finati and I sat in the very back with a couple visitors and investigators, just listening to his talk. Which was great, all about missionary work, and our personal conversion... and then he got to the part about the first vision, and the spiritual power present when we hear a missionary describe this moment. He continued by saying "So I would like to do a prática. We want to hear one of the missionaries here tell us the first vision, and I asked Presidente Melo which elder or sister I should choose, and he said SISTER HILL. Sister Hill, are you here?"

OH MY GOODNESS I just about melted into my chair. Sister Finati mais ou menos had to push me towards the front, I was so shockd. So yes, I related the first vision, and bore a quick testimony of Joseph Smith, and the fact that he was called as a prophet in the front of 300 people, Presidente Melo, and a member of the seventy. Welcome to Imperatriz, Sister Hill.

But I hope that everyone has a wonderful week! Thought of the week is this video, that I absolutely loved:
Super cool, I urge everyone to watch it and apply it to your week. (Seriously, as I watched it here in the Lan House, I was just covered with chills. The church has such cool videos it's not even funny)

Imperatriz Bound

After serving here in the ala São Luís for 5 meses, I have been transferred for Imperatriz! My companion is Sister Finati (super stoked) and yeah. That's all, tudo vai dar certo!

But we definitely saw miracles this last week of the transfer. Throughout this whole transfer we had a lot of struggles.. with health and hospital trips, and I had to renew my visa, and we had a ton of problems with the other sisters here in São Luís. Yes, this was a long hard transfer. But I am so grateful for Sister Vidal, and we grew really close this transfer. Grateful for hard things and the lessons learned.

Miracle of the week was definitely yesterday. We met a woman named Celma, and her daughter Jalime (12 yrs) in the road, and conversed a bit with them. She shard about her life and the fact that they have lots of problems in their family - expecially with finances. We promised her that if she would come to church, she would feel the spirit and start to see a difference in her life. And what do you know - she showed up. Along with 8 other investigators! We had André and Carla and Shaolina - 3 people with datas por batismo - as well as Kevyn, Kevynne, Gabí, Celma and Jalime. It was so awesome to see this people with real intent to learn about the church, and partake of the sacrament.

But I am super grateful for my time here in São Luís. I have grown close to so many of the members here, and felt so close with the people that we meet and teach and invite. I will sincerely miss the area São Luís <3

Photos, Photos, Photos

Quick update on the week!
Luckily we are feeling a lot better (tchau sickness) and we are back to work. Met a ton of awesome new investigators this week, really people who are interested to hear our message! Super pumped to continue with them this week.
Milagre of the week:
Yesterday, we were running to pick up investigators to go to church, 3 jovens. As we arrived, were they ready for church you might ask? no. They had forgotten.. but asked us to wait for them so that we could walk together. At this point, it was 3:20... and church started at 3:30. So we decided to pray, just asking Heavenly Father that they everything would work out, that we could make it to church in time to partake of the sacrament - and WOOHOO they were speedy, and we took an onibus, and arrived exactly when they were passing the sacrament! Miracles happen. Also, we had 7 investigators in sacrament meeting (: Yay yay yay! I love that they were able to feel the wonderful spirit that is present durante the sacrament.

Hope everybody has a wonderful week! This is the last week of the transfer, so we are booking it here in São Luís!
Grande abraço! Boa semana!

the Savior understands me

This week was super tiring, due to the fact that I had to go to Teresina to revew my visa... but it's all good. I can stay. Hahaha.

Had an awesome zona conference, and they focused a lot on the sacrament. And not just on how we teach the sacrament as missionaries, but also our understanding and how we apply the sacrament. It is such an important thing each week, and sometimes we lose ourselves in those short minutes. I really urge everyone to study a little bit more about the sacrament this week, and the transforming power that is available if we just have faith.

I love the message and testimony that Elder Holland shares in this video entitled The Savior Understands Me. It is short (just 3 minutes) but so powerful.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUhgBU3coPY

Miracle of the week:
Yesterday, we visited Iona and Gabriel, who had a bunch of questions about the book of mormon, and the truthfulness of it. We headed out a little bit (*extremely) late, and ended up sprinting to the house of our investigator, Shaolina, to walk to church with her. And it was incredible, because as we were literally running through the road, both Sister Vidal and I felt that we were running faster/lighter than physically possible... haha. Without a doubt, we had angels on our sides! And all ended well, because we were able to get to church with both her and her 2 year old son, Pedro, all in one piece. Phew. Miracles still happen, without a doubt.

Have a wonderful week! Beijos!

Another Week in the Life of Sister Hill

For sure I have already passed my 9 month mark, because TIME IS FLYING.
AAH.

This Saturday I hit 10 months! I cannot believe it.
We celebrated the 1 YEAR mark of Sister Vidal this past week, with cookies from Mr. Cheney's and we bought a Captain American balloon in the road (because she has pretty much only had American companions... hahaha. 5/6 were american, so yes, we celebrated like americans (: haha) And I taught her one of only the finest things in life: reciting the missionary purpose using helium. Yes, we died laughing.

Miracle of the week - this week was rough, as we were working our tails off to find new investigators, as well as invite everyone and their dog to sacrament meeting...
But after church ended, we decided to run over to the house of Iona and Gabriel, two investigators that we have had since JUNHO. We have set countless dates and goals with them to head to the cartório and get married so that they can get baptized, and they are so great! But so so busy, so it's been a tad difficult. They started taking the lessons because Gabriel's mom was a member, and passed away due to unexpectable cancer. And I can see that they have changed so much, that they truly understand the plan of salvation and want to be sealed in the temple as a family. So this is when we challenged them to head to the cartório this week and get the papers - and they accepted. So everybody, PLEASE pray for Iona and Gabriel, that they can get this done and finally get baptized!

This week will be suuuper tiring. I head to Teresina tomorrow para renovar meu visto, so that Brasil doesn't kick me out haha #prayformadi than we have zone conference, and by then the week is practically over! Wow.
Hope everybody has a wonderful week!

GENERAL CONFERENCE...OH MY!!

My oh my, conference was oh so good this year. So incredible to hear the wonderful testimonies of our modern prophets, and receive real revelation and answers for our questions! for anybody that missed it, please go take a look on the church's website, because these sessions were too good to miss. A few of my absolute favorites from this conference were from John C. Pingree Jr, Jeffrey R. Holland (because of course. I don't need to explain this one), and Donald L. Hallstrom.
And it was awesome to see two of the men speaking were Brasilian (: Everybody here was happy about that too haha.
But I loved a common theme that I saw in conference - life is hard. But hard is good! we learn from the hard things. and we don't have control over what happens in life, but we do have control over how we will react, and what we will focus on.
So we need to focus on Jesus Christ and his gospel.
It is so simple!

Miracle of the week:
For starters, this week was just plain hard. After finding out that I hadn't been transferred (after packing all of my suitcases, due to the fact that everybody guessed I would be transferred... super funny, because throughout the week, members would see me and were so happy that i stayed behind, hugging me saying 'I thought you were transferred!?!? I'm so glad you stayed!!!' (: hahah I love the members in São Luís) we traveled to Teresina for the leadership counsel, and returned thursday 5am. (we were more or less missionaries of the Walking dead variety... but oh well, what can you do?) We also lost a lot of working time this week due to conference.
BUT we did see miracles, I can promise you that!
after hearing conference, I was just aching in my bones to find and teach a family. As we started searching for new investigators, we were knocking on doors, and 12 year old Isaque opens the door. Come to find out, he lives with his mom, dad, and another brother. We testified of the plan of salvation, and they showed a lot of interest. I am grateful and excited to continue with them, and I pray that the Spirit can work in them to testify of the truthfulness of the gospel.
I love the gospel! I love missionary work! (especially when it's hard. haha.) there is honestly no place I'd rather be!
boa semana!

transfers, ukulele, feeling old

Transfers: Still here in sâo Luís, with sister vidal.  Happy I got to stay here in São Luís for one more transfer (:

Sister Finati was transferred... which I totally saw coming, totally understand, but I would be lying if I didnt say I was a little sad. *sigh* all part of the mission, I know.

BOUGHT A UKE (: Will try to send pics next week!! Sorry pictures are so few and far between, the lan houses here are so sketchy, and I dont want to risk losing all of my pictures and videos.

So yes, I will continue as lts here in são luís. Its been great to help the other sisters, especially two who I have quickly grown to love so so much. Sister Brito (she is from Capo Verde, Africa. We bonded so quickly, and after splits, we were just in shock at how good of friends we are. It was like we knew each other before this life, and then just picked it right back up here on earth. haha) and Sister Freeman (newest American in the mission!! This was her first transfer, and she speaks so well. I was jealous at how well she understood eerybody!! hahaha but yes, she did study 3 years of spanish before the mission, so theres that)

Watched the womans conference - in portuguese.
And it was incredible to see that I UNDERSTOOD almost everything that was going on. Just a few words and parts that were a tad unfamiliar to me, but overall I understood the most important parts (I think..) (that being said, I would be everso grateful to receie the liahona in ingles in a month or so... thanks. hahahaha)

But this will be a good week. Wednesday we head to Teresina for the leadership counsel, then sabado/domingo CONFERENCIA GERAL! I am so so excited (: It doesnt get better than this!!

Love you <3 have an awesome awesome weeK! AND ENJOY CONFERENCE OKAY? This will be 2/3 conferences until I get home. Wow time flies.

cause i'm halfway there, and i'm on my way

and I'm feelin', feelin', feelin' super dang tired. but it's all good, it's just a part of mission life! haha but yes, I have officially hit my 9 MONTH MARK. Wow I feel so old. Like how did this even happen!? It feels like just yesterday I got here, and I didn't understand anything that anybody was saying! hahaha.

But this week was good!
Work was a tad complicated, as Sister Vidal was complaining about knee pain, so we had to take it a bit more slow...
This past week we had a noite familiar with a family. They invited some family members - two girls agges 20 nd 19 - who aren't members to participate, because their dad passed away recently.
So we focused on teaching the plan of salvation, and the fact that we have hope due to this plan. It was so spiritual, at one point we asked a question that really touched one of them. She started to cry, sharing about the fear and unsurety that she felt. And we just testified. We cried with her, sharing her pain, but also sharaing of the reality of the atonement - the fact that Christ knows exactly how she is feeling, and that he is with her through every moment. And because of this, we are happy! We have hope, that through whatever trial, whatever situation, everything will be alright. Tudo vai dar certo!

Met a new family this week that I am really hoping and praying will progress. The woman we met is Maria do Socorro. She was a referencia from the stake presidente, and she is so wonderful. As we taught her, she started to cry, expressing that she was worried about her familiy, especially her daughter (22 years old, involved with drugs, and has a daughter already) nd her husband (an alcoholic). It was awesome to see the spirit working in her, testifying of what we were teaching, so that when the moment came to invite her for baptism, she accepted - and accepted a date for 18 of november. they need to get married before she can be baptized, but oh well.
That is clearly my calling here in São Luís, to get everybody married.
Ha.

this is the last week of the transfer, so we are running until the end! definitely expecting miracles here in our area, com certeza!
Hope everyone has a wonderful week!

Family night, Sushi, and the fact that I am offically BRASILIAN

Hello all!
This week was wonderful, and I'm grateful for the mini miracles I was able to see day by day. Really it's the little things that are evidence of how much Heavenly Father loves us, and wants us see His work move forward here on the earth.

We started out this week with family night with some recent converts here in the ward. When we got there, the feeling was a tad awkward.. because they had fought throughout the day.. not exactly "love at home" like no. As I was planning family night (yes, just I. Sister Vidal was sick, so it was up to me to plan what would happen woot woot) I had the feeling that we needed to focus on the talk of President Monson from this past conference, as he bore testimony of the importance of the Book of Mormon. We read through the talk, and shared feelings and testimonies of the book of mormon with them, and invited them to write in some books for us to hand out for investigators. And I am telling you, it is incredible to see how family night can change everything. The Spirit was present, we could feel a difference in how everybody felt, and we left this family feeling happy and spiritually energized. Miracle, for sure.

We are now teaching a reference from a member, a man named Biel, and his wife, Macia. They have 3 kids, and Biel uses a wheelchair due to a bacteria that left him paralyzed in his legs. When I first saw them in church, I kid you not, I was excited. Because I knew that I could relate to this family, their feelings, their experiencies, and how the gospel will help and lift them. We had our first lesson with them this past week, and it was awesome to testify of the reality of the plan of salvation, and how it is through this gospel that we unify our families. Beil accepted the baptism date of 11/11, so we are excited to continue helping him prepare for this day (:
It is so incredible to see how everything has a purpose. I thought a lot about the fact that everything is in the Lord's time - I needed to be here now, to be able to share with this family my testimony, and the fact that I understand what they need. Grateful for the Lord, and the fact that he is so, so mindful of each and every one of us. He truly loves us, and wants us to feel that.

Crazy that this week I hit my half-way mark of my mission... like WHAT. HOW. I have no idea. Time passes by so quickly!
Hope everyone is getting excited for general conference, and preparing spiritually to receive personal revelation! (:

Boa semana!

Well HELLO there September

wow time flies so fast.
I'm not sure if this is just something about being on a mission, or if everybody is feeling this too. But man, I can not believe it's already SEPTEMBER. Where did the time go? In a few weeks I will be hitting my halfway mark... WHAT.

But this week was just plain good! We have really been able to see some serious miracles in our area, which is just splendid.

First miracle of the day - l, Madison Hill, finally got a hair cut. *cue hallelujah chorus* and it is sooo much shorter than I expected... mas já era. Hopefully I can send a pic soon hehe

This Saturday we had the baptism of Laila, an investigator of Sister Bagatoli and I. Laila has been going to church for 3 years, and I remember when I arrived in the area and saw her, I just thought "I'm gonna baptize this girl." Ahaha. All of the lessons we had with her were so incredibly spiritual, as we testified of the reality of the plan of salvation and repentence, that the atonement is for us. Her baptism was so spiritual, and Sister Vidal and I sang 'I Know that My Redeemer Lives' in Portuguese/English/Spanish. Because hey, how many times in your mission will you have 3 languages in 1 dupla?

Our other investigator, Silvana, will be baptized this next Sunday! It was such a miracle this past week when she met with us, telling us that she is finally leaving the man that she was living with, to move in with her son - so she could finally be baptized! MILAGRE. I had prayed and prayed that she could have the courage to pack up her things and move out, and finally make this convenant with Pai Celestial (: Sadly, she moved to a different area, so she is no longer in our ward (bummer). But so incredibly excited and happy for her.

Have a fabulous week. Read the Book of Mormon, say your prayers, do some visits with the missionaries this week - whatever you can to strengthen your testimony (: OOH and read through conference. Because SEPTEMBER 23 is womens conference, and SEPTEMBER 30 is conference again!!! Clearly I'm not excited at all. Hahaha.

My Soul Is Light Today

This past week was transfers - I will continue here in São Luís, but Sister Bagatoli was transferred :/ Sad, because she is a wonderful missionary, and we worked really well together. My new companion is Sister Vidal, from Argentina. So yes, I am the head sis training leader here in são luís.. a tad stressed, but hey! I trust in the Lord, and I know that this is His work. With Him, anything is possible. Excited to see the miracles of this transfer.

But we had the awesome opportunity to have Mission Tour this past week, with a seventy speak to us, and all of the missionaries meeting together in Teresina. Our mission has dropped in the number of missionaries lately, so there are about 115 of us. But it was so great to see everyone together, and be edified by the spirit. I definitely left the meeting with a heart full of hope and determination to baptize everyone. #hideyourkids, #hide your wife, #she be baptizin' everybody! But it was so good to just embrace the spirit, and grow our testimonies in this wonderful gospel. They talked a lot about the sacrament, how this is the only ordenance that we do repeatedly for ourselves - what a blessing! Really hope that a few of you read the article I attached last week. I studied it out this past week and have grown to love the ideas there. Read it, love it. It is so so good.

But I am excited for this transfer, and to see the miracles that will come! Hope everyone is well. Read your scriptures, say your prayers, eat a few doritos - all is well! Tudo vai dar certo (:

Fasting Can Change Hearts and Minds

Hello all!
Hope everyone is doing so so well. Just a few thoughts from the week:

This week I just need to testify of the power of fasting. It is truly miraculous when we fast with a purpose, and with faith. Trusting that the Lord will do His part when we dedicate our thoughts and actions to Him. As part of our fast this past week, Sister Bagatoli and I decided to fast that we could find new investigators, who were ready and willing to accept the gospel. And it was incredible to see throughout the week, that throughout our way, we found them. First we have Cristina and Rafael, a reference from a member in the ward. They are awesome, and have lots of questions about the Book of Mormon, as well as many insights from the Bible. They need to get married before they can be baptized, but accepted the date of October 7! Excited to continue with them.

Miracle of the week- Tuesday night, we were so tired after treking throughout our area, trying to find people. All of our appointments fell through, and many weren't interested to hear our message, so at this point we were beat. We decided to head to a lanchonette to grab something to eat, and on our way over we passed a small family, dad mom and baby. About 5 seconds after we passed them, I had the strongest feeling that we needed to go back and talk to them - and Sister Bagatoli had the same feeling. Turns out, that they had had a lot of struggles lately, and that the head of the family, Agosto, had been waiting for a miracle. He has been without hope these last few weeks, sleepless and depressed, not knowing how to help his family. And as we testified for him that Heavenly Father knows Him and recognizes Him, he started to cry. I am always so amazed to see how Heavenly Father truly knows our hearts and our needs, and He will always send aid when needed.

Yesterday was the last day of the transfer - and today I officially have 8 months. WOW time passes so quickly. In 1 month I hit my half-way mark... opa.

Saw this article on the church's website that I thought was fantastic. Hopefully you all take a few moments to look over it (:

Miracles Still Happen

Hello all! Hope everybody had a wonderful week!
These past two weeks, so much happened. I wish I could adequetely express everything. Wow.
But we had the baptism of Analice, my 'Fourth Floor, Last Door' miracle. And the baptism was so incredibly spiritual. It was crazy, because the morning of, we received a call telling us that the baptism couldn't happen in the chapel.. but me and Sister Bagatoli, being the two stubborn do-or-die missionaries that we are, ran our little booties off to pull off the baptism in our chapel. And luckily all was well - it was incredlble. A miracle to say the least. The man who baptized Analice, is super spiritual, and has a gift. He told us that during the baptism, he felt the presence of many spirits, watching and supporting the baptism of this incredible little soul. We had another experience as well that I will never, ever forget for the rest of my life. So grateful for experiences that strengthen  our faith, and show us the reality of the plan of salvation. I know without a doubt that this plan is true, and this plan is real.
Never doubt that.

Yesterday, I ran into a sister that I met in the CTM here in Brasil! small world. She had to return home early because of medical problems in her legs, and is now at the hospital many times a week. BUT if there is one thing I have learned in my mission, it is this: tudo tem proposito  - everything has a purpose. Everything happens for a reason.

This is the last week of the transfer - truly one of the most spiritual, miraculous  transfers. Grateful for all that I learned so far, and I have so much to learn still.
WOW. Life passes quickly. Next week I hit my 8 month mark.. crazy.

Boa semana tudo mundo! Never forget, miracles still happen to this day! I know this wihout a shadow of a doubt.
